Indian Film Dhoom 3 become first film to gross Rs. 6 crore in Nepal

Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif famous film Dhoom 3 may have created new history in Nepal as it has emerged as the first film to gross Rs. 6 crore at the box office, sources said.

The Dhoom3 has been screened without rivalry at multiplexes across Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley.

Film distributor close sources, ‘Dhoom 3’ are the first film to earn the amount in the country.

The film - starring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Abhishek Bachchan - earned the amount in just in two weeks.

A Nepali film if earns around Rs.20 lakh is considered a hit film at the box office. By that standard, the third installment of Dhoom franchise has earned the same of 30 hit Nepali films.

Previous year, around 60 foreign films released in three multiplexes in Kathmandu and earned over Rs. 20 crore.
"It is normal that hit artists like Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Katrina Kaif sell well in the Nepalese film market", said Tirtha Thapa, a noted film director.

"The Indian film industry brand name sells here, rather than the story," Tirtha said.

Indian films rule Nepal's movie halls. It is only in distant villages where Nepali films have a high demand, Tirtha Thapa said.

"The artist, acting and quality of a picture make it successful in the eye of audience."

In main cities like Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Pokhara and Bhairahwa, Hindi films have an 80 %share of the film market, according to Director.

The Nepali films quality is deteriorating although the number of films produced every year has touched 120, Mr Thapa said.

Around a decade ago, Nepali films used to earn Rs. 50 lakhs to 60 lakhs approximately  but now they hardly make Rs. 15 lakhs to 20 lakhs, Thapa further said.
