Samsung Galaxy latest phone could feature eye-scanner technology

Samsung Company will release its Galaxy S5 smart phone by April and is studying for first time using eye scanner technology as it readies the high-end handset to compete with Apple's iPhones.

The Samsung S5 will be paired with a latest wearable device that will be an evolution of the Galaxy Gear smart watch, Lee Young Hee who is executive vice president of the company's mobile business, said in an interview on Jan 06. Samsung, which posted profit this week that missed analyst estimates, will debut the fresh products together as it also boosts marketing of tablet computers.

"We have been announcing our first flagship copy in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time," executive Vice President said. "When we release our S5 phone, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be enhanced."

Samsung, which sells one of every three smart phones globally, is adding latest features and models to fend off Apple in the high-end market and Chinese makers luring budget clients with handsets for $100. Asia's biggest technology company will announce at least one other wearable device this year, Lee said.

In South Korea Samsung registered a design in October for eyeglasses that can show information from a smart phone and allow users to take calls.

Sales of the Samsung S4, the company's existing marquee handset, slowed after Apple released the iPhone 5s and 5c in September last year. The 5s includes a fingerprint-identity sensor, and Samsung is considering using an eye scanner in its top-end smart phones.

"so many people are keen about iris recognition technology," Young Hee said at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "We are studying the chances but can't really say whether we will have it or not on the Samsung S5."
